Chris Cantell Discusses Acquisitions: Dow Jones este pe cale sa treaca din mainile familiei Bancroft in cele ale lui Rupert Murdoch

Dow Jones, firma care publica legende ale revistelor financiare cum ar fi The Wall Street Journal si MarketWatch, detinuta de familia Bancroft, este pe cale sa foe cumparata de Rupert Murdoch. Numele poate va suna familiar, el fiind bogatul si mandrul detinator al News Corp, asa ca apropiata cumparare va pune publicatiile Dow Jones alaturi de alte branduri importante ca 20th Century Fox si Daily Telegraph. Acesta poate fi si inceputul unei serii lungi de schimbari pentru nou-cumparatele ziare, Murdoch fiind renumit pentru influentarea continutului articolelor; totusi, faptul ca noii lui angajati sunt castigatori ai unor importante premii, ar trebui sa fie un stimulent destul de puternic incat acesta sa ii lase sa faca lucrul pe care il stiu ei cel mai bine. Mogulul media vrea ca The Wall Street Journal sa contina mai multe stiri de interes general si sa devina mai popular in Europa si Asia; globalizarea cuprinde si canalele media si ca de obicei, aduce cu ea schimbari caracteristice. Investigatiile antitrust, o problema frecventa in orice corporatie mare, nu ii vor deranja pe Murdoch si echipa sa, studiile aratand ca ziarele si posturile lui de televiziune nu vor actiona pe aceleasi piete locale. Totusi, tranzactia va fi supravegheata de o serie de comisii si va necesita aprobarea Comisiei Federale de Comert (Federal Trade Commission) si a Departamentului de Justitie american. News Corp. a fost infiintata in America in 1980 si a cumparat jumatate din 20th Century Fox in urmatorul an. A creat si reteaua Fox care a fost adesea criticata pentru stirile sale impartiale, iar temerile ca Murdoch se va implica in munca jurnalistilor sai nu sunt nefondate. Sa speram totusi ca va intelege importanta pastrarii unor marci ca WSJ relevante pentru cititorii lor, altfel viitorul jurnalismului de calitate este in mare pericol.
