Chris Cantell Discusses Acquisitions: Microsoft and Yahoo renewing...
by Claudia Sonea

The damsel in distress, Yahoo Inc. refuses to give up. Who cares what analysts or shareholders think? Obviously, CEO Jerry Yang couldn’t care less. After a failed negotiation with its pretender Microsoft, he continues to assure that it is in no hurry or pressure to sign a deal. At The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference Yang had a wonderful speech of how executives are doing their best to render Yahoo more appealing to consumers and to advertisers. Yahoo President Susan Decker reinforced Yang’s statement and added that the main focus will be on page, search, mail and mobile services. They are very content of the two weeks trial partnership with Google. Yet, don’t make your hopes up, as no merge would actually be possible as it would give them more than 80 percent of the market. On the other side, a deal with Microsoft would not only be profitable, but also if they were to sign a partnership it wouldn’t face any antitrust problems. The love affair between Yahoo and Microsoft is kind of bumpy. News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch says that Yang is too sentimental and just wouldn’t let go the company that he founded, while Microsoft is not accustomed with big time deals and that is why they withdrew the offer at the beginning of May. Yet, a possible marriage might still take place as Microsoft admitted to be in talk with Yahoo again. This time it has shareholders like Icahn on its side and although it did not make any new offer, the forecast is favorable. Don’t go away, more to come!
