Where is Yahoo heading to?
by Claudia Sonea
Yahoo Inc. is feeling lonely and tries to get back the attention Microsoft Corp. once offered through its takeover bid. Although, the damsel in distress tried to find comfort in the arms of another knight in shinning armor, Google Inc., things are rather peculiar because there would be a tiny problem concerning the antitrust laws (Google holds 75 percent of the search advertising market in the United States and Yahoo 9 percent). Microsoft's $47.5 billion offer was not to be sniffed out, but Yahoo did it and now it has a hard time to determine for to offer to be renewed. Therefore on the market Yahoo’s shares fell 85 cents, while those of Google and Microsoft rose. U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, chairman of the Senate subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights, started to take interest in the matter and both Yahoo and Google announced to wait until late September for a partnership and if it will pass freely, it will last for a decade. Yahoo deals with outraged shareholders who are led by Carl Icahn and complain of the way the matter was handled by Yahoo’s board of executives. He refused to comment on the matter and schedule it on August 1, the annual meeting. However, he did promise to replace Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s CEO, because he is considered to be to blame for the current situation, letting his emotions to mix with business. Microsoft lost the interest in Yahoo, but only partial as now it is trying to buy Yahoo's search engine considered to be better more profitable . Calling it off with Yahoo Microsoft is focusing on AOL, Internet software service provider Salesforce.com Inc. and other possible targets. Meantime, Yahoo too had success with Google and the trial period of partnership. If only there wouldn’t be the antitrust issue…
