Nokia fighting tooth and nails...
by Barbora Misakova

When in January Nokia announced it would offer free navigation on its cellphones it was clear evidence of fear of competitors such as Google or TomTom and Garmin. Offering free navigation and making local applications and services available to its mobile phone users was just an attempt to catch up with others. Nokia Corporation, a Finnish multinational communications corporation is engaged in the manufacturing of mobile devices and also in converging Internet and communications industries. With Nokia’s sales in more than 150 countries and global annual revenue of EUR 41 billion it is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones. But the competition is stron! g and if you want to succeed also in next year, you have to offer more. And that is the reason why big corporations are purchasing those smaller ones which have usually much better technology know how. Creating something new, what will attract more customers and defeat competition is long-term aim for any big corporation. As it seems, Nokia do not hesitate and its best to survive. That’s probably the reason why Nokia had bought U. S. geographic technology firm MetaCarta. Even though in the Friday’s statement was not disclosed the deal price, according to MetaCarta’s know how and the fact it has been cited in KMWorld’s 100 Companies That Matter in Knowledge Management, we could assume it was not cheap. Their technology combines geosearch and geotagging capabilities which allow its users to find written content about any place. That could add functionality in local searches on Nokia’s devices.
